Counting Coins using a Proportional Manipulative Model on Mathy Monday

I know that title is a mouthful!!  But I love using this manipulative model with my 2nd grade math intervention students, so I wanted to share.

This model helps students that are still unitary in their thinking, meaning that they primarily count items by ones, and have difficulty thinking of 1 dime being the same as 10. And what is up with the smallest coin being worth 10¢ and a larger one worth 5¢.  You can see why kiddos get confused!!   These pieces are proportional in size to their value.

One side of the manipulative pictures the standard coin, flip it over and the back pictures the number of pennies that show the coin's value.  I also use a 100 penny chart with a dollar on the flip side.  Students use the coin manipulative pieces to cover the value.  After students become proficient using the 2 sided pieces, I then change to 1 sided pieces with the single coin only.  The next step is to make the transition to standard coins.
So if you have students that are having difficulty counting coins this might just help.  I have just posted these manipulatives to my Tpt store.  Check it out.

Five for Friday Linky

I am linky up with Doddle Bugs Teachings  Five For Friday Linky !
This week has been crazy!  Five things that are on my mind:

1. Testing,  My schedule has been completely messed up because of testing for the past 2 weeks!  Thank goodness that is finished and we can get back to normal for at least 1 week!! Maybe!

2. It is MARCH already!  I can't believe it!  The rest of the year will fly by!!

3. I just want to stop the merry-go-round of life and get off!!  All the distractions and randomness that I have no control over interfer with my ability to focus on the goals that I want to accomplish!  I know that is pretty deep, and without the messy details doesn't really mean much to you guys reading this but just trust me.  I wish life's details would start to go my way SOON!

4. Our new Greyhound is Greyt!  He really is a good boy!  Walks well on the lead and is housebroken. He is very loveable and even gets along with our 4lb. Yorkie!  If you are looking for a dog, adopting a greyhound may be for you.  Check out Greyhound Pets of America .

5. So happy to have a oldest son home for a few days!!  He is on College Spring Break and hasn't been home since January.  Hoping with the busy week ahead we will be able to spend at least some quality time and have some good home cooking!

It is March!! I can't believe it! So it is time is to link up with Farley at Oh Boy 4th Grade!
Currently I am listening to Monk while my hubby is watching and I am blogging.  I do like that show.  Monk is quriky, I like that about him.
I am loving my "new" greyhound.  My family adopted a retired racing greyhound.  He just joined our family this week.  Griffin is 10 years old and a very good boy!

I am thinking about my lesson plans!  I really should be working on them!!!

I am wanting and needing an ipad!  At the KCM conference I saw several apps that I want to try in my classroom!!  Only 1 problem, no ipad!   So I want and need one!!  If I can only convince my principal of that!  Ha Ha

My three L's:  Like:  Lattes - I have to have 1 or 2 lattes to get off to a good start each morning! Carmel Mocha Yummy!
Love: long weekends! Who doesn't?  I just don't get them often enough.
Hate:  Leaving, I never like to say goodbye!
